Make voting mandatory

19 December 2009

Recently Gujarat Government came with a proposal to make voting mandatory in the local bodies, and Narendra Modi says it is available in 36 countries and it should be applicable for Legislative assembly polls and Parliament elections.

I have earlier written an article on feedback mechanism in government. Did Narendra Modi have an opportunity to find the reason in which common man is not interested in election process?

In our democracy common men have power when election comes, otherwise no.

Will Narendra Modi propose to have a law for a feedback mechanism and ‘call back’ option? If so, I agree with him. Other wise, he is challenging the common man.

  1. We are in a democratic setup, a country where state fails to provide the basic needs to the citizens , how can anyone think of such authoritative decisions.

In my opinion its my choice whether i want to vote or not,

  2. Yes Deepak, I agree with you. There is no use of such regulations… but… it will be interesting to see how they implement it. Let’s wait and see

  3. Well, mandatory voting is a fairly new idea.. So only time will tell if it succeeds.. And on a national level, I don’t think such rigid and stringent laws can work..
